^{page 59 note 1} The Mycenaean form is Ἐτεροκλέρειος, not -κλερήῑος, as often stated (so here p. 418), since it is a derivative in -ιο- from the stem Ἐτεροκλερεσ-. The Homeric form Ἐτεοκληείη (Il. iv. 386) is clearly metrical lengthening for . (Chantraine, G.H. i. 31, is wrong.)

^{page 61 note 1} Professor A. J. Beattie has recently argued (J.H.S. lxxvi [1956], 1–17) that the decipherment is erroneous and that the language cannot possibly be Greek. Lack of space forbids me to say more than that, in my view, his linguistic arguments are unsound and unacceptable.
