Cf. Dar.-Saglio, s.v. Cunae, with fig. 2130: ‘la forme du bouclier dans lequel Alcmène, dans une Idylle de Thèocrite, berce ses enfants jumeaux’ is just that of an ancient σκ⋯φη.

Aeschylus' ⋯σπ⋯δα διν⋯σαντος and Theocritus’ δ⋯ναςε σ⋯κος are recorded alongside each other in Passow and Pape–Sengebusch (but not in L.S J.), s.v. διν⋯ω. Cf. Soph. Aj. 575 f., στρ⋯φων σ⋯κος.

Cf. Thes., s.v. φρ⋯σσω, 1060 B–D.

Cf. Theocr. 24. 30 ff.

The periphrasis ὑπ⋯ + dat. could hardly do here, because it ‘significat rem cuius aliquid vim sentit subiectum et exposition (Schneider, Callim. i. 231): the coils exert no effect on the bristling.
