1 Tchernetska and Wilson gloss this quote to mean the use of chemicals was not compatible with philological integrity. Are they referring to Oedipus' famed ability to solve riddles? The grammatical structure here suggests it is not that we are to liken the palimpsest to Oedipus when we approach it, but rather we ourselves are to become Oedipus when studying it. Perhaps then, in the spirit of Sophoclean Oedipus, it refers to a gradual uncovering of layers of truth about one's past.
